“Man Mandir” (1971), which is a new movie by the standards of this blog,starred Waheeda Rehman and Sanjeev Kumar. This movie, by most indications was a flop. This movie had some nice songs in it, though, which were popular at that time. I loved these songs though at that time I was not aware that those songs were from this movie. I have already discussed two such songs from this movie in this blog.

Here is another song from this movie. Unlike the songs from this songs that were earlier discussed, I was not aware of this song and I in fact listened to this song for the first time only a few hours ago.

This is a maa-beta song where Waheeda, playing the mother of a young kid, sings this song while the friends of the kid,who have assembled to their home, presumably to celebrate his birthday,look on.

Lyrics of the song (written by Rajinder Krishan) are cute and nice. The song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. It is a lovely song that needs to be better known among music lovers.

Towards the end of the song, there is these words
“gaaye chhota sa balmaa
mere angna gilli khele”.

These words are the similar to the title of an old song from ‘Shehnaayi” (1947) and there too the lyricist was Rajinder Krishan himself. I am looking for this elusive song for quite some time and I request my readers to point me towards this song, in case they have any information about this song, which has been a long pending farmaish for this blog.

“Pyaar ki Pyaas” (1961) is a moving story of an orphan girl who is adopted from an orphanage by a childless couple who bring her up with love an affection. But once the couple manage to have a child of their own, this girl gets neglected and she ends up in the same orphanage. In the end, the couple realise that their neglect towards the girl was unfair and they search for her. In the end,all is well that ends well.

This less known movie has some superb songs in it, which are unfortunately not all that well known. Two songs from this movie have been discussed so far and it was only while posting them that I became aware of these songs.

Here is another song from this movie. I became aware of this song just a few hours ago. What an AWESOME song it is.

From the story of this movie (kindly described by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh while commenting on a song of this movie), it would seem to me that this song is sung on the accasion of the couple blessed with their own child. This song is sung by the mother (played by Nishi) and other ladies, while their adoptive daughter, now all grown up, finds herself getting ignored.

What a melodious song it is ! This song, which is sung by Lata and Geeta Dutt has quickly grown up on me and now I cannot have enough of this song.

The song is written by Bharat Vyas. Music is composed by Vasant Desai.

Here is this song (both adio as well as video). This song is an absolute gem, as far as I am concerned, and it deserves to be much better known among music lovers.

Here is another song from the Film “Aradhana” which I like a lot. Actually in this genre of songs my favourite is “mere ghar aayi ek nanhi pari” from “Kabhi Kabhi” which is already posted, and the post in written by Lalitha ji.

I think she is the senior most of guest writers alongwith Raja ji, in this blog. Ah! but they are the original followers of the blog. I am the latest addition to this Guest writers list. One would think that I should behave suitably and wait till my seniors have a post or two in before sending my next :) . While some of the seniors are sending posts every now and than, those who are just senior to me like Ava ji and Pradeep Raghunathan ji have been silent. Not fair.

“Bahut na insaafi hai !” in filmy parlance. I am expected to complete century, but if there is no one to give me competition, there is no fun :). And I am sure Khyati ji will complete her milestone of century post as fast as century of lyrics. I am seriously considering holding back my posts and go back to sending lyrics. Infact I sent a few lyrics also to Atul ji this week.

Jokes apart, this song is a finding solace kind of emotional song as, Rajesh Khanna Senior is dead and Sharmila Tagore is solely responsible for her son who will grow up to be Rajesh Khanna Junior. She is singing of her aspirations and hopes for the future regarding her son.

Lata Mangeshkar is the singer, S. D.Burman is the Music director and the lyricist is Anand Bakshi. It has a happy and sad version. Actually happy version has one more stanza which is missing from the video clip. I was not able to find any audio version containing the additional stanza. I think it must have been played in the background in the film at the end, when Rajesh Khanna Junior is getting married to Farida Jalal. The stanza is :

“Mother India” (1957) was produced and directed by Mehboob Khan. The movie had Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Chanchal, Kanhaiyalal, Jilloo Maa, Kumkum, Sheela Naik, Mukri, Ram Shastri etc in it.

As many as nine songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. When I watched the movie sometime in late 1970s, I did not realise that the movie had so many songs in it.

Here is the tenth song from “Mother India” (1957). This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Nargis, with Sunil Dutt also visible in the picturisation. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

“Maa Beta” (1962) was a Tasveeristan Production movie. It was produced by Kuldip Sehgal and directed by Lejhraj Bhakri. The movie had Nirupa Roy, Manoj Kumar, Ameeta, Lalita Pawar, Manmohan Krishan, I.S.Johar, Sheela Ramani, Kumar, Vijay Dutta, Manorama, Leela Mishra, Tarun Bose, Indira Bhansal, Shamlal, Raj Prakash, Madhumati, Shukla, Brahm Dutt, Brahm Bhardwaj etc in it.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is about a mother (Nirupa Roy) missing her child who has been given to a childless woman (Sheila Ramani). At least that is what I can make out from the picturisation which shows Nirupa Roy, lip syncing in Usha Mangeshkar’s voice, pining for her son, while thta kid is being held rather possessive manner by Shiela Ramani while a hapless looking Manmohan Krishna looks on.

Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hemant Kumar.

Among the present generation of music directors of Hindi films, I like the songs composed by A R Rahman the most. If the songs composed by him are written by poets like Javed Akhtar, Prasoon Joshi or Gulzar, they are like icing on the cake. I must confess that the initial listening of his songs does not give me an extra-ordinary feeling. But after the release of the films and exposure of the songs to my ears multiple times, most of his songs begin to sound great. It takes time at least for me to develop a taste for his brand of music – from ‘Roja’ (1992) to ‘Gajini’ (2008), the last of his film I watched so far. Obviously, songs of ‘Rang De Basanti (2006) composed by A R Rehman gave me the same experience. I used to feel not so great about songs like the title song ‘rang de basanti’, ‘masti ki paathshala’ and ‘roobaroo’. It was only after watching the actual picturisation of these songs with contexts that I developed the taste to appreciate them. The film of course won many awards for its music and songs.

A few months back, I had occasion to watch RANG DE BASANTI (2006) part by part on the internet. It was then that I came across a song from this film which I did not remember to have heard earlier. The song is ‘lukaa chhuppi bahut huyi’. When I watched the video clip of the song, the first thought that came to my mind was how I had forgotten about this song. The soul touching lyrics, the composition, the rendition and the picturisation of the song created an emotional upheaval in me. I have yet to come across such type of a song in Hindi films depicting mother-son dialogues particularly the son who is no more, is ‘talking’ to her mother from the outer world. Since it was an unique song, I thought of writing an article on it for the blog. But before that I was curious to know as to how the idea about having in the film this ‘out of fashion’ song came to the minds of those who were associated with this film.

After days of searching and browsing in the internet, I could locate an interview of A R Rehman which he gave on the eve of the release of the film on 26th January 2006. The interview is posted here. The idea of this song was put forward by A R Rehman and both the director Rakeysh Mehra and lyricist Prasoon Joshi liked it. But there were many associated with this film who had reservation about such a song. The other question was who would sing this song. But A R Rehman had already made up his mind that this song has to be sung by Lata Mangeshkar in so far as the female voice in the song was concerned. The male part was sung by A R Rehman.

On the recording date for this song, Lata Mangeshkar got ill and the date of recording was postponed by a month. On the second recording date, Lata Mangeshkar indicated her inability to come to Chennai for recording the song as she was to attend an important function organised by Yash Chopra on the recording day. When Rehman conveyed to her that in that case he would have to forget about recording the song in her voice as he was going abroad for a few days that Lata Mangeshkar cancelled her visit to Yash Chopra’s function and recorded the song. According to A R Rehman, as per the original plan, Lata Mangeshkar was to sing only a few lines of the song. However, she sang those few lines so beautifully that later her portion of singing was expanded.

Since this song was not initially planned, it was incorporated in the film as a background song depicting the feeling of a mother as she watches her son’s pre-funeral ceremony with full military honour. The mother (played by Waheeda Rehman) recalls her son’s childhood days when they would play the ‘hide and seek’ game. And now it is a sad reality that her son is hidden from her forever. The newness in this song is the imagery of her dead son comforting his mother in saying that he is a free bird in an open sky like a kite without the fear of its thread being cut-off from the middle. He is in a simple and beautiful world just like the one she used to tell him through her bedtime stories in his childhood. But in the last, he tells ‘o mother there is everything here but I feel alone without you’.

The musical prelude sets the mood of the song. Note the prominence given to percussion beats when Lata Mangeshkar sings the third stanza. What a beautiful flute interlude as she sings ‘aajaa saanjh huyi mujhe teri fikar……’ in each stanza to get a feel of the dusk. The highlight of the song is a somewhat longish and fast saragam sung individually as well as jointly. A R Rehman is known for his Indo-western fusion music. In this song, while he keeps the music prominently Indian for Lata’s part of the song, the music turns predominantly western when A R Rehman sings. I guess, it is A R Rehman’s way of showing the preference of music between mother and a son. My salutation to Lata Mangeshkar for beautifully rendering this emotion filled song at the age of 75+ years.

The audio clip gives uninterrupted song. The video clip of the song though interrupted by some dialogues in between, is visually good to watch.

“Sansaar” (1971) was produced by Mohan Saigal and directed by Dilip Bose. The movie had Naveen Niscol, Anupama, Nirupa Roy, Abhi Bhattacharya, Meena T., Jayshree T.,Krishan Dhawan, Mohan Choti, Chandrima Bhaduri, Asit Sen, Jankidas, Chaman Puri, Baldev Khosla etc in it.

One song from this movie has been discussed in the past. Here is another song from this movie. This is a “Maa Beta” genre of song where a beta sings this song to his Maa, telling her that their days of hardships will go away and he will take good care of her when he grows up.

The song is sung by Usha Mangeshkar and it is sung by a young boy whom I am unable to identify. Identifying the Maa is a cakewalk though, she is a archtypical Maa of 1970s, viz Nirupa Roy ! :)

“Balyogi Upmanyu” (1958) was a mythological movie based on the tale of Upmanyu who became a sanyasi in his childhood (therefore the prefix “Balyogi” ).

The movie was a Prakash Pictures production and it was directed by Harsukh Bhatt. The movie had Lalita Pawar,Shalini,Sulochana, Vinod Kumar,Jeevan, Kanhaiyyalal,Madan Puri, Mohan Choti etc in it.

The song under discussion is sung by Usha Mangeshkar and Lata. It is clear from the lyrics that Usha Mangeshkar sings for Upmanyu while Lata gives playback for Upmanyu’s mother in this song.

I have no idea who played Upmanyu and his mother in the movie. So I have no idea about the actors on whom this song is picturised seeing that only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

That way this song is a lullaby song as well as a mother child genre of song. “Abhilaasha”(1968) was directed by Amit Bose for R D Productions. The movie had Meena Kumari, Nanda, Sanjay Khan, Sulochana, Agha, Mohan Choti, Jagdish Raaj, Murad, Rehman, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Kashinath etc in it.

The movie, which is by and large forgotten by now, had some wonderful songs in it. Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the fifth song from “Abhilaasha”(1968) to appear in the blog. This song is mentioned as one song in HFGK, but this song appears twice in the movie, and both times with different lyrics.

The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

The song is lip synced by Meena Kumari. Part II of the song is picturised as a birthday celebration song, with Rehman and several children also visible in the picturisation.

A sad event that did not seem to gather much attention, occurred on Tuesday, 29th December, 2015. Legendary singer Subir Sen breathed his last in Calcutta (Kolkata). He was 81-years-old. The lovers of film music will remember him for his renditions in many Hindi and Bangla films.

Subir Sen was born in 1934 in Dhaka (now in Bangladesh). Not many details are available about his early life. His family moved to Calcutta around the time of the partition of the country. He studied in Calcutta for his bachelor’s degree. His interest in music and singing was evident right from childhood. He had formal training in classical music. One name that is mentioned is that of Shri Atul Prasad of Calcutta, from whom young Subir received his initial grounding in classical mould.

He started his singing career in the early 1950s. Some references identify the Bangla song “Dur Diganto Dheke Ache Meghe” as his first song. He became popular as the romantic playback voice of the heroes in Bangla films. Many of his songs became hits and added to the success of the films and the actors. Many of his numbers like “Saradin Tomay Bhebe”, “Ogo Shakuntala”, “Ogo Chaand Tumikotha Alo Pele”, “Oi Ujwal Din Dake Swapno”,”Monalisa Tumi Ki Bolona”, and “E Jeno Sei Chokh” continue to be popular with the lovers of Bangla film music. [Note: This is list is a sampler and not exhaustive].

In the mid 1950s, Subir Sen ventured to Bombay.  Director actor Guru Dutt suggested him to come to Bombay. He and Salil Chaudhry helped Subir to find his feet in the Bombay film industry. Impressed by his voice, Shankar Jaikishan gave him his first playback opportunity in Hindi films, with the song “Manzil Wohi Hai Pyaar Ki, Raahi Badal Gaye” in the 1957 film ‘Kathputli’. This song became very popular in its time and still continues to be one of his memorable songs.

His voice being very close to Hemant Da, the producers and music directors in Bombay did not grant him adequate opportunities, and his singing assignments in Hindi films are few and far between. In all, he sang for less than 25 (plus one unreleased) Hindi films, and the number of songs is less than 30. But when we look at the list, practically all of his songs have been very popular. Be it “Main Rangeela Pyaar Ka Raahi” from ‘Chhoti Behan’ (1959), or the enchanting duet with Geeta Dutt “Gori Torey Natkhat Naina” from ‘Hum Bhi Insaan Hain’ (1959), or “Dil Leke Jaate Ho Kahaan” from ‘O Tera Kya Kehna’ (also 1959), or “Hamen Un Raahon Par Chalna Hai, Jahaan Girna Aur Sambhalna Hai” from ‘Masoom’ (1960), or “Dil Mera Ek Aas Ka Panchhi’” from ‘Aas Ka Panchhi’ (1961), or another duet with Geeta Dutt from 1962 film ‘Gangu’ – “Kya Kahaa, Zaraa Phir Kaho”, and the duet (with Poornima Seth) from the 1962 film ‘Jaadu Mahal’ – “Kasam Na Lijiye, Kasam Na Dijiye’, or the lovely duet with Lata Mangeshkar – “Gagan Ke Chanda, Na Poochh Hum Se” from ‘Apne Huye Paraaye’ (1964) – the list of his memorable songs is fairly long. Considering both Hindi and Bangla films, he has recorded more than 400 songs.

Additional interesting notes about his career. He made a cameo appearance in the the 1971 Hindi film ‘Anubhav’, appearing as himself in person, and singing a Rabindra Sangeet song at a party – “Shedin Dujonay Dulechinu Bonay”. He also composed music for a Hindi film ‘Midnight’ that apparently was released only in England, in 1970 or thereabout. The film had songs sung by Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhosle, besides himself. Some songs of this film are available online.

There are two films for which he has apparently sung, but the songs of this film and their information is not available as yet. These films are ‘Madam Zapata’ (1962) and ‘Hukum Ka Ekka’ (1964). Of the solo songs that he has sung in Hindi films, almost all are represented on this blog. Today I bring on a very rare solo song from an unreleased film, ‘Rani Chandrawati’ from the 1960s. Some sources peg the year for this film as 1968. However, as per the Geet Kosh, this film was not released for exhibition.

The songwriter’s name for this song is not specified.  The music is composed by SN Tripathi. A very moving song full of melancholy, about a mother being separated from her child. The voice and the pace of singing expresses the emotion so well. Commemorating the departure of this talented artist with this sad song of separation.

“Mere paas Maa hai …”

“Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother’ so today on the international day of women, we pay our tributes to women and the ‘mother’ in them.

“Swami Tinhi Jagaacha Aai vina Bhikaari” …

Goes the lines are from a poem in ‘Marathi’, it means that… Even the lord of all the ‘three worlds’ is a beggar without a Mother…

Yes, every one of us understands the value of this word ‘mother’ and the value of her unconditional love she showers on us. How she cares for her child, how she serves a child for his whole life till she is alive.
Those who have been fortunate to have a mother and also those who are deprived of a mother’s love know very well the value of this word ‘mother’.

In our society, culture and traditions we have the highest regards for our Mother. There are numerous stories of a ‘mother’s sacrifices as well as how some of them were the inspiration behind making of our great heroes and those many famous personalities and not to forget those who may not have got the publicity or the limelight, or those whose stories of great courage, stories of successful life inspired by their mothers may not have reached to us.

Also there are many who have been able to make a mark in their life and have achieved a lot only because their Mothers and their Mothers have been a great inspiration for them and played an important role in shaping their destiny.

Today, we salute them all and salute their ‘womanhood’ because after all before being a mother they all are ‘women’.

A girl child – a daughter, a sister, a wife- better-half, a mother – a woman plays so many important roles in and around us.
She loves, she inspires, she cares, she gives meaning to life, she is mother, she is friend, she is daughter, and she is not only wife but simply a life…
A beautiful message describes a woman as ‘ the willingness to listen, the patience to understand, the strength to support, the heart to care and just to be there … that is the beauty of a woman’..

Today also happens to be the birth anniversary of poet-lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi.

He has talked about woman’s plight, her sufferings, how she has been treated for years in the society, what challenges she face, what are her problems and many more things associated with a woman. Through his poetry and songs he has time to time discuss womanhood and have thrown light on the contemporary world where woman have been neglected, insulted and tortured.

We are all aware that Sahir Ludhianvi shared a strong bond with his mother and many of his poems on woman have been inspired by his mother’s hardships and challenges she faced during her life.

Most of the books on Sahir Ludhianvi mentions the strong bond of relationship that he shared with his Mother and many of us are aware of this through information in books on Sahir Ludhianvi or other sources like interviews of famous film personalities or information available on the internet.

But I do not think that his mother has been discussed in any great details in any of these resources. Today we throw some light on the above based on the information available in few books on Sahir Ludhianvi and some information on internet.

In the ‘introduction’ of the book ‘ Jaag Utthhe Khwaab Kayi- Sahir Ludhianvi ’ (Penguin Books India-Yatra Books-2010) editor Murlimanohar Prasad Singh mentions that if one has to understand Sahir’s personality, ideology, emotions, thoughts and dreams and his poetic soul and if one has to know Sahir, one has to know about his mother Sardar Begam.

To put his point further he has cited the novel “Mother” by Maxim Gorky published in 1906, based on which a Russian movie “Mother” was made in 1926 which was directed by Vsevolod Pudovkin.
The plot of the original novel as mentioned on Wikipedia is as given below;

In his novel, Gorky portrays the life of a woman who works in a Russian factory doing hard manual labour and combating poverty and hunger, among other hardships. Pelageya Nilovna Vlasova is the real protagonist; her husband, a heavy drunkard, physically assaults her and leaves all the responsibility for raising their son, Pavel Vlasov, to her, but unexpectedly dies. Pavel noticeably begins to emulate his father in his drunkenness and stammer, but suddenly becomes involved in revolutionary activities. Abandoning drinking, Pavel starts to bring books to his home. Being illiterate and having no political interest, Nilovna is at first cautious about Pavel’s new activities. However, she wants to help him. Pavel is shown as the main revolutionary character. Nevertheless Nilovna, moved by her maternal feelings and, though uneducated, overcoming her political ignorance to become involved in revolution, is considered the true protagonist of the novel.

A single woman whether she is a ‘widow’, a divorcee, or a ‘woman simply abandoned by her husband’ has a tough task surviving in a male dominated society. The hardships faced by a woman in her situation could only be imagined, especially in the era where she lived.

I have tried to visualise how Sahir’s mother would have faced the challenges of her times and how she was able to do upbringing of Sahir and his love for poetry even in those turbulent times of her personal life. Her firmness, righteousness, virtuousness, her mental stength, etc. have been reflected in various poems/songs that Sahir has penned while writing songs related to women.

So when we have a lullaby from his pen his words are full of aspitaions for her child;

pariyon ke baalak
taaron ke bhes mein
tujhko bulaane aaye
chanda ke des mein

Sardar Begam, Sahir’s mother left her husband’s home, when he married for 12th time, and she took her child with her and brought him up singlehandedly.

One can imagine how little Sahir was being fed, what values were being inculcated in him and how his life was being shaped.

(When I shared this song earlier, it reminded me of the famous poem ‘the hand that rocked the cradle, is the hand that rules the world’)

When Sahir’s mother left her husband’s home and took the child Sahir with her, her husband tried to pressurize her to come back home and also to leave the child with him.

But instead of succumbing to his pressure Sardar Begam filed a case for divorce and also for the custody of Sahir. Sahir’s father had even threatened to Sahir if his demands were not met.
During all this time Sahir’s mother must have surely been worried about the uncertain future of her child.

We could find these worries articulated in Sahir’s songs;

kal ye kamzor sahaaraa bhi na haasil hogaa

At times she may have even cursed the circumstances in her life and the fear of losing her own life may also have stuck up her mind, but whom she should trust for her child’s safety;

Seeing the struggles, trials and tribulations of her mother, a child of tender age has these reasuring words for her mother:

aur zaraa sa paal de mujhko
phir main tujhko paaloonga
jo maangegi so laaunga

And when this child grows up he vows to eliminate all the struggles all the problems from his mother’s life;

And that is why even when Sahir entered adulthood his mother was the centre of his being and when Sahir established himself as a successful lyricist he does everything to ensure that his mother is happy and whenever she was upset Sahir would get tense and he could not be at rest till he get to know that everything is well with his mother.

The troubles she had gone through in bringing up Sahir, after separating from her husband and all the difficulties of a being a woman is what we find expressed in various poems of Sahir and those that later on become part of films.

Sahir’s mother left him in 1976 and Sahir left us on 25.10.1980, just four years later.

I had marked the song under discussion much earlier when I got a chance to share some of the above songs for this blog.

(On second thought, and knowing about the relationship between Jan Nisar Akhtar and the few years Javed Akhtar spent with Sahir Saab it will be interesting to know if the character of mother and the famous dialogue ‘ mere paas maa hain’ from the film Deewaar was at any time inspired from Sahir’s life. Rather I strongly feel that it must have been.
Recently I even tried to speak to Javed Saab but he was out of Mumbai for some work)

Today, May 8th 2016 is being celebrated as Mothers’ Day in many countries including India. Whether it is Mothers’ Day or any other day, whenever I remember my mother, I always recall the famous dialogue ‘mere paas maa hai’ written by Salim-Javed and delivered on the screen by Shashi Kapoor in the film ‘Deewar’ (1975). These four simple words say a lot about the importance of the mother. I used to wonder what gave Salim-Javed the idea to create this famous dialogue. I checked their profiles and came to know that both of them had lost their mothers in their respective childhoods. My own take is that somewhere in their sub-conscious minds, they missed their mothers and that was how this dialogue came about. In any case, this dialogue fitted well in the film. Shashi Kapoor had his mother as the only possession which he valued above materialistic possesions.

On Mothers’ Day, I also remember Nida Fazli’s Hindi poem depicting the portrait of a mother. Nida Fazli’s poems are mostly based on real life situations and this poem is no exception.I would normally have reproduced one or two couplets from the poem to draw a point. I, however, feel that the whole poem is worth reproducing. The sentiments expidentified by most Indians, especially those from rural and semi-urban areas:

Besan ki sondhi roti par khatti chatni jaisi maa
Yaad aati hai chauka, baasan chimta, phoonkni jaisi maa

Baans ki khurri khaat ke oopar har aahat par kaan dhare
Aadhi soi aadhi jaagi thaki dopahari jaisi maa

Chidiyon ke chahkar mein goonje Raadha- Mohan ali ali
Murge ki aawaz se khulti ghar ki kundi jaisi maa

Biwi, beti, behan, padosan thodi thodi si sab mein

There are many Hindi film songs dedicated to mothers. The first one which comes to my mind is usko nahin dekha hamne kabhi from ‘Daadi Maa’ (1966) in which the mother is compared with God. A more or less similar metaphor was used in Nida Fazli’s another poem:

Ghaas pe khelta ek bachcha paas maa muskuraati hai
Mujhko hairat hai kyon duniya Kaaba aur Somnath jaati hai

The earliest Hindi film song on mother I can locate on the Blog is maa pyaari maa god mein khela bachpan mera from ‘Aaina’ (1944). Hindi films have witnessed metamorphic changes in its contents over 80 years after the first talky film was released in 1931. But the songs on mother-child relations continue even today. After all, time will change but not the mother-child bonding. One of such songs which bring tears to my eyes is main kabhi batlaata nahin from ‘Taare Zameen Par (2007).

For the Mothers’ Day, I am presenting a forgotten song “ek hi rishta maa ka jag mein baaki rishte jhoothhe” from the film RISHTA (1954). Mubarak Begum sings this song beautifully on the words of Pandit Phani. The song is composed by K Datta.

“Deepak”(1951) was directed by Chandrashekhar for Ram Ganguly Productiions, Bombay. this by now obscure movie had Prithviraj, Vijaylaxmi, Umesh Sharma, Arun Ganguly, Sajjan, Kamal Mehra, Shanti Madhok etc in it.

This movie had ten songs in it. Here is the first song from “Deepak”(1951) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Uma Devi. Madhukar Rajasthani is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ram Ganguly.

It is interesdting to note that Ram Ganguly the music director had produced this movie. It is also interesting to note that he had signed up Prithviraj Kapoor (I guess that Prithviraj in the cast is same as Prithviraj Kapoor) for his movie soon after he himself was throown out by Prithviraj Kapoor’s son Raj Kapoor from his movie “Barsaat”(1949). I am sure there has to be some interesting information behind all this.

Coming to the song itself, only the audio of this song is available. Uma Devi had sung as many as five songs in this movie and so it appears that she had sung for the leading lady of this movie. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of this song.

I have not been able to get a few words right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections wherever applicable in the lyrics.

It is clear that the tune of this song is an unabashed lift from Uma Devi’s famous song Afsana likh rahi hoon(Dard)(1947)

With this song, “Deepak”(1951) makes its debut in the blog.
